Even regions which were never conquered--such as Germania (German-speaking tribal regions), Lusitania (Portugal), Hibernia (Ireland), or Caledonia (Scotland)--the old Roman name is used today to some capacity or for some type of reference. As far as Italia rather than Romania, historically, names of nations are often quite imperfect. For example, Belgium is properly named for a powerful Celto-Gaulish tribe that lived there, while France is named after the Franks who had conquered that territory. Actually, the cultural link there is much more powerfully tied to ancient Gaulish tribes or later the Romanized Gauls.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Another example of a poor job at naming is "Austria," which is the English-language word for the country of Österreich. Actually, the original "Austria" was the name of a duchy within the Kingdom of Lombards or Langbard, which was where Lombardy, Veneto, Trentino, and Friuli are today. Since Österreich conquered and occupied that land prior to the Risorgimento, and the old Austria-Australia confusion, giving Österreich the nickname "Austria" seems like a dumb idea. Italia, or at least the reference to the old home province of the Roman Empire, should probably have been named Romania. Also, this land was known in the ancient world as Saturnia. At any rate, since the old Roman names are stylish and catchy, they have been a fun way to reference cultures or regions. They went after a blue-collar, perhaps lower-middle class area, and whose residents were mostly Italian, Slavic, Armenian, etc. To put this into perspective, "white and black" were still the majority populations in the general area, and MLK's birthday was not yet a federal holiday. At the time, none of us saw the mind-numbing irony to this. How can say a Croatian-American student--for example--be held responsible for what occurred on a different continent, in a different century, on the opposite side of that continent, in a state which had barely attained statehood at the time, long before their ancestors had even arrived here, for any events of that time period!!?? This has got to be the goof of all time! slave ships arrived with kidnapped people from West Africa in the
1490s, to Brazil and the West Indies, so I don't know where this "1619" date comes from when only 5% of those kidnapped people were brought the American colonies. How do we know that? Because it says so in the 'Black Almanac', a "Black source" found in practically every public and academic library in the country. However, the massive role of the Spanish and Portuguese colonies is taboo territory, so I guess we're supposed to shoulder the blame for them! Not to mention that for fourteen centuries, an Indian Ocean slave trade existed out of East Africa, which operated in the same manner, with powerful local rulers cooperating with Arab slavers. Kidnapped people from weaker tribes were shipped and sold into slavery into every country from Morocco to India! Even to China! In the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wu27WJ0Axcw" target="_blank">one ethnic group dominated that traffic</a>. They would purchase--with whatever exchange was necessary (gold, silver, weapons, etc)--captured people <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2EaH510LAY" target="_blank">from those local rulers</a>, and ship them to Brazil for example. The historical record is very clear in that ten times as many of these kidnapped people were sold into slavery in Brazil than to the American colonies.<br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Again today, a scan of the news brings up a half dozen or so provocative stories. In reality, this person is of historically mixed-race, not that she would care. One of <i>Tom Moore's angry grandkids</i>. Week after week, we hear new names of usually questionable people; victims of the system. Shot by the police, usually under questionable circumstances. Well, if we examine that further, there have been over 1,000,000 murder victims in the United States during the last fifty years; since the early '70s. How are all of those people being murdered in a country which at no point during that time was experiencing war? What about <a href="https://img.washingtonpost.com/rf/image_1024w/2010-2019/WashingtonPost/2017/02/10/SocialIssues-Religion-Immigration/Images/Merlin_2577618.jpg?uuid=kHI64O-vEeaZc8Xvt8z7DQ" target="_blank">Brittany Binger</a>, a teenager who was sodomized while being strangled, and then just left face down on the ground? How about <a href="https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article22345031.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200b/0_JS215162958.jpg" target="_blank">Jessica Doty-Whitaker</a>, a young wife and mother who was murdered for holding a sign that said "All Lives Matter"..?</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">These are names of people who we're just supposed to.... get over.... but it never ends! These are all innocent victims! I can think of more, but I have to stop somewhere! Over a million people murdered, which averages out to just under 400 per week! In 1973, Ilario Bertuccio was an eighty one year old janitor, was gunned down by "revolutionaries" in San Francisco, while walking home. He was somebody's father, grandfather. Twenty year old Terese DeMartini was also shot by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zebra_murders" target="_blank">the same "revolutionary" group</a>, on the same day! She survived. They were likely specifically of our people. Other people can keep retelling the stories of a tiny number of innocent people slain, but they sure as hell don't want to talk about other much more numerous victims! These are the numbers of murder victims, but there are twenty times as many violent crime victims! These revolutionary-academics are throwing stones from a glass house! The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_wolf" target="_blank">Italian or Apennine wolf</a> enjoys a large range throughout most of the peninsula and a large area in southeastern France. There are several other species of foxes and jackals. The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marsican_brown_bear" target="_blank">Marsican or Apennine brown bear</a> is extremely endangered, and those few are limited to an isolated pocket of the central Apennines. They're not leaving because of it's isolation, but it's assumed that they could expand without any trouble if their numbers could increase. When looking at some images of Italian wolves, I noticed that there were some which were very large, as we usually think of the wolves in North America, and some were small. I've actually noticed this within the coyotes which I frequently saw in San Mateo County over the years. Most were small and usually a golden-brown color, while once in awhile I observed some which were large and wolf-like... and usually more of a grayish coloring. Also, when looking at a <a href="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/48/Canis_lupus_distribution_%28IUCN%29.png/1920px-Canis_lupus_distribution_%28IUCN%29.png" target="_blank">world map of the current wolf range</a>, I see numerous oddities.</span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">First and foremost is that <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf" target="_blank">wolves</a> inhabit all of the Arabian peninsula, but inhabit no range in Mexico! How can there not be wolves in Mexico with all of it's diverse terrain, and be commonplace in the largely sandy deserts of Arabia? That really blows me away! I'm sure there are wolves in Mexico, in small wandering bands here and there, but with no actual range. Also, there is a huge range in Canada, but not much in the United States. How can there not be more wolves in the U.S., but they're commonplace in northern Alaska or the entire western half of Greenland? Maybe I could see where there are forests and animals in northern Alaska, and perhaps they can live in dens during the incredibly harsh winters, but what about Greenland? There's nothing but snow and ice!</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Felines and canines apparently can adapt to almost any terrain. African lions adapt very easily to the snow, and they grow a thick winter coat and everything. The genetic memory of when they inhabited the tundra is still within them. Also, identical African and Asian leopards can thrive in both blazing hot African savanna or in the winter snows of northern East Asia. Wolves seem to be the same, surviving in mountains, deserts, and ice. When looking at the <a href="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/83/Ursus_arctos_range_map.svg/1920px-Ursus_arctos_range_map.svg.png" target="_blank">current worldwide brown bear range</a>, they obviously must have crossed the land bridge from Asia, but are now very uncommon in the United States. They were once common in California. Also, Europeans and East Asians did the same. I see a couple of odd locations in northern Iraq and northern Japan within that range. The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlas_bear" target="_blank">Atlas bear</a> was apparently a brown bear sub-species that inhabited the Atlas Mountain range of northwest Africa, but became extinct due to human activity and hunting. I've read where there were a very small number of scattered Atlas bears and the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbary_lion" target="_blank">Barbary lions</a> in northwest Africa a century ago. Oddly, far from being separate, bears and lions have co-existed in many locations throughout history, including Ice Age Eurasia and North America. The Sabines had two words for wolf: hirpus (used in religious contexts) and lupus, the latter of which was incorporated into Latin.<br /><br />Although the Romans did not worship wolves, killing them was likely considered taboo; unlike the Etruscans, the Romans very rarely sacrificed wolves in rituals, and no records have been found of wolves being used in the amphitheatres, despite being more numerous and easily accessible compared to other, more exotic animals used. The use of wolves in Roman folk medicine, while attested by Pliny the Elder, was minimal compared to other animals such as snakes or bears and, contrary to popular imagery, Roman standard bearers did not wear wolf skins, with the only units attested to have worn them being the velites, who were the poorest and youngest warriors using the wolf skins to distinguish themselves. The belief in werewolves was still widespread in Italy during the early 1920s, and covering their faces when resting outside at night was once traditional among rural people, as sleeping whilst facing the full moon was thought to transform the sleeper into a wolf. The wolf also featured prominently in Italian folk medicine. Baby colic was treated by tying a sack filled with a piece of wolf gut around the child's neck, while miscarriages were prevented by tying a wolf's intestine around the mother's abdomen. Rheumatism and tonsillitis were treated with wolf fat, while a tooth or tuft of fur was worn as a talisman against the evil eye.<br /><br />The Romans apparently did not consider wolves overly dangerous to people, with the only references to them attacking people being proverbial or mythological. Although Italy has no records of wolf attacks on humans after World War II and the eradication of rabies in the 1960s, historians examining church and administrative records from northern Italy's central Po Valley region (which includes a part of modern-day Switzerland) found 440 cases of wolves attacking people between the 15th and 19th centuries. The 19th-century records show that from 1801 to 1825, 112 attacks occurred, 77 of which resulted in death. At the time, Spain owned this area and named it Alta California. Some years later, it came under the control of Mexico before finally becoming U.S. territory and then a state. The name Fort Ross was 1st documented around 1842 - Ross derives from the Russian word russ (or ros).</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">The original idea was to establish a Russian settlement in the area, with the Russian-American Company being one of the main forces at the time. In addition to these settlers, other nationalities eventually began living there, along with various Indian tribes in the vicinity.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">After the heyday and eventual abandonment of the fort, there has been constant re-modeling, repair done due to the extreme wetness and ocean winds of the area that affected the fort.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Today it is a national monument on the historic registers and also a state park. Also, cow milk has a lot of sugar; 13 grams per cup on one label that I looked at recently. Last week I purchased some walnut milk, which has only 2 grams of sugar and is not a GMO food. Enjoy our family's labor of love any time of the day for a simply better way to live the good life.</i><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">I would venture a guess that the Mariani family, who were originally from Croatia, was either <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Istrian_Italians" target="_blank">"Istrian Italian"</a> or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalmatian_Italians" target="_blank">"Dalmatian Italian."</a> For example, the famous race car driver Mario Andretti was born in Montona, Italy; however this town is now part of Croatia. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italians_of_Croatia" target="_blank">There were a lot of Venetians who had lived in those regions going back centuries, particularly in Istria</a>. I don't claim to know who has the better irredentist claim to Trieste or Istria, but it has long been in intellectual and historical dispute. In any case, the Mariani family has an interesting history: <a href="https://mariani.com/pages/welcome-to-our-family" target="_blank">Our Family Story</a>. There has also historically been a large Croatian-American population in San Francisco and the greater bay. The Mariani Nut Company is located in Yolo County, east of Napa County and north of Solano County.
